A shared commitment to science-driven innovation, patient safety, ethical practice, and responsible preparation for the potential future of psychedelic-assisted therapy.
The CEO Alliance for Mental Health, a coalition of 15 leading national mental health organizations, is pleased to share its Vision and Guiding Principles for Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy (PAT).
Developed through the Alliance’s Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Workgroup, co-convened by Dr. Marketa Wills, CEO of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and Dr. Anthony Estreet, CEO of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), these principles establish a unified foundation for responsible leadership as the science, clinical evidence, and regulatory landscape continue to evolve.
The Alliance recognizes both the potential of emerging therapeutic approaches and the importance of rigorous scientific evaluation, ethical safeguards, clinical excellence, and equitable access. These principles reflect a commitment to proactively preparing for possible future treatments while placing patient welfare, scientific integrity, and public trust at the center.
As leaders of national mental health organizations, the CEO Alliance for Mental Health commits to providing nonpartisan, science-driven guidance — if established as efficacious and safe in standard review and regulatory processes — that proactively prepares for the possibility of a future of Psychedelic Assisted Therapy (PAT).
We encourage rigorous evaluation of the potential of these emerging medicines and care models with evidence, equity, and experience to improve health outcomes and advance community well-being. Psychedelic Assisted Therapy is understood to be a comprehensive clinically appropriate treatment that is evidence-based, includes meticulous assessment and selection of patients, features extensive preparation prior to medication administration, and requires continuous in-person monitoring, interventions during psychedelic medication therapy, integration, and post treatment services.
The Alliance adheres to a unified set of principles that guide our leadership, public engagement, and collective action:
1. Science-Based Therapeutic Innovation
To make responsible recommendations about PAT, we support clinical innovation grounded in the most current and strongest available scientific evidence that includes rigorous research standards, transparency, practice-based learning, peer review, and continuous evaluation in a safe, properly equipped and staffed clinical environment.
2. Ethical Stewardship & Inclusive Access
We uphold the highest ethical standards across research, training, clinical delivery — ensuring equity, inclusion, patient protection, and respect for all populations. Similarly, payment models must foster inclusive access to therapeutic care regardless of insurance coverage.
3. Whole-Person, Therapy-Centered Care
As we await further research findings needed for efficacious, safe, and indicated use, we affirm that psychedelic-assisted therapy when provided in a controlled therapeutic setting under medical supervision must consider the whole person. This would include careful determination that treatment is suitable for the person, there has been appropriate clinical and medical preparation prior to and following the administration of the psychedelic substance and is supported by the most current science-based therapeutic intervention which includes post session integration in a safe, properly equipped and staffed clinical environment.
4. Workforce Development & Clinical Excellence
We approach PAT as a clinical practice that requires robust professional training, supervision, and competency development to ensure safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care. We further affirm as the legal and policy landscape continues to evolve care must be delivered in alignment with the most current applicable federal and state regulatory requirements, which includes professional licensure standards, professional codes of ethics, and defined scopes of practice.
5. Respect for Cultural Knowledge and Experience
We responsibly engage voices of lived experience, recovery communities, and relevant indigenous and traditional knowledge to inform ethical practice, education, and professional development while avoiding appropriation or misuse.
6. Responsible Communication & Public Understanding
We practice thoughtful communication that is grounded in the most current research. We support transparent, accurate, public education that is driven by science and builds public trust.
7. Scientific Independence & Integrity
We commit to disclosure and management of potential and perceived Conflicts of Interests, and we advocate for responsible innovation that prioritizes patient welfare, scientific integrity, and public trust.
8. Shared Clinical Guidance & Learning
We support the systematic use of methods to promote, integrate, and evaluate evidence-based practice in routine, real-world settings through the development of common frameworks, clinical guidance (e.g. clinical care pathways, clinical protocols, and clinical guidelines), and educational resources.
